NET OF INDRA - existence and myth

CHANG ART will hold a solo exhibition for Park Sung Tae, a Korean artist who is active in China, for its opening exhibition. Park’s solo exhibition will first be held at CHANG ART in Beijing and then at Seoul Watergate Gallery, and will present the artist’s new pieces for 2009. It will be the artist’s 4th solo exhibition in China. Park’s artworks were introduced to the Chinese art sector through the Shanghai Art Fair in 2003. Among the Chinese contemporary arts dominated by 2D painting, Park’s unique installations using wired cages not only exhibit expressions with personality but also give profound answers to philosophical questions concerning humans, leaving a deep impression in the minds of Chinese art experts and enthusiasts.

Park’s new pieces for this upcoming show at CHANG ART are large-sized variable installations. In the darkness that fills the exhibition space is a netted wall with wefts and warps symbolizing the environment and time, and inside the wall are several tens of human bodies made of steel wire, hanging under a black-light source. The artist introduced a carefully-thought-out epic structure in each piece to deal with human existence and desire in a more mature way. The epic structure ties each story on the wefts and warps of time and space under a common theme, and smoothly draws the audiences into a conversation with the artist. In addition to the aforementioned variable-steel-cage installation, Park has also been creating steel wire structures in frames. The frames will be exhibited at Seoul Watergate Gallery, CHANG ART ’s partner gallery in Korea, from April 17 to May 22. There, the artist will present his Joseon-dynasty-style portraits depicted with the use of steel cages. This Joseon dynasty portrait series not only transfers the outlines of the portraits to steel cages but is also the result of the artist’s bold attempt to reinterpret traditional portraits in 3D.

People say that the 21st century requires the ability to incorporate different resources rather than to create new ones. Thus, the contemporary art scene is seeing constant efforts to tear down the walls between the genres and to experiment on the possibility of creating new visual arts through harmonization. Park, who majored in Eastern Art, has been able to create installations as a result of his bold attempt to transcend genres. Park’s solo exhibitions in Beijing and Seoul will give us the opportunity to experience contemporary art and to take part in CHANG ART ’s efforts to tie the two major cultural cities of northeast Asia to each other.

昌阿特将为在中国从事创作的韩国艺术家朴成泰举办个展，作为画廊正式开馆展览。本次个展将展出艺术家2009年新作，相继在北京昌阿特和韩国首尔WATERGATE两个画廊同步举办。昌阿特本次展览将是艺术家在中国的第四次个展。朴成泰的作品从2003年上海艺术博览开始被中国艺术界所熟知。在以平面绘画为主的中国艺术界，朴成泰利用铁丝网的独特性创作的装置作品不仅表现的形式富于个性，而且对困扰人类的某些哲学问题提出了独到见解，给中国艺术界人士和艺术爱好者留下了深刻印象。

本次在昌阿特展出的朴成泰新作是大型装置作品。在空间黑色背景下，矗立着象征环境与时间的纬线和经线编织的网状墙壁，在紫光灯的照耀下，数十个反光的铁丝网人体呈现在观众的眼前。与以往作品不同，艺术家通过作品之间的紧密叙事性结构的成熟艺术形式，揭示人类现实与欲望的生命主题。叙事性结构不仅可以把代表时空的纬线与经线联系并组织成一个叙述主题，还自然地将观赏者带入与艺术家灵犀相通的境界去展开心灵的对话。除了这种可变的铁丝网装置作品外，朴成泰最近正在创作将铁丝网造型嵌入画框的作品。4月17日至5月22日期间，画框作品将在昌阿特韩国地区伙伴画廊——韩国首尔WATERGATE gallery展出。在本次展览上，艺术家展出了以铁丝网描绘的朝鲜时代肖像画。该朝鲜肖像画系列作品不仅仅是把肖像画的轮廓移置于铁丝网，而是在立体的重新诠释传统肖像画技法的理念下，经过精心创作诞生的作品。

21世纪是创造新资源的时代，更是整合以往各种资源的时代。正如时代写照，在现代艺术中突破流派间的壁垒，通过融合来实践新视觉艺术可能性的努力从未间断。学习东方画的朴成泰之所以能够创作出今天的装置作品，正是他跨越流派界线兼收并蓄的结果。在北京和首尔两地举行的朴成泰个展，观者不仅可以身临其境的体验到这种现代艺术，而且还可以了解到昌阿特画廊本次展览的策划初衷，目的在于在东北亚两座重要文化中心城市北京和首尔之间建构一个文化交流的空间。

창아트는 개관전으로 중국에서 활동하는 한국작가 박성태의 개인전을 기획하였다. 박성태의 이번 개인전은 베이징 창아트와 서울 워터게이트 갤러리 두 공간에서 연이어 개최되며, 작가의 2009년 신작을 선보인다. 작가에게 있어 이번 전시는 중국에서 갖는 4번째 개인전이기도 하다. 박성태의 작품은2003년 상하이 아트페어를 시작으로 중국 미술계에 알려지기 시작했다. 평면회화가 주를 이루는 중국현대 미술계에서 철망을 이용한 박성태의 독창적인 설치작품은 개성 있는 표현은 물론, 인간을 둘러싼 철학적 질문에 심도 있는 답안을 제시하여 중국의 미술 관계자와 미술 애호가들에게 깊은 인상을 남기고 있다.

이번에 창아트에서 전시되는 박성태의 신작은 대형 가변적 설치작품이다. 전시장을 가득 매운 암흑 속에는 환경과 시간을 상징하는 씨실과 날실로 엮은 그물형태의 벽이 자리하며, 그 속에는 블랙라이트 아래서 빛을 발하는 수 십 점의 철망인체가 부유하고 있다. 작가는 이전의 작업과는 달리 각각의 작품간에 치밀한 서사적 구조를 도입하는 보다 성숙한 양식으로 인간 실존과 욕망에 관한 문제를 다루고 있다. 서사적 구조는 시공간의 씨실과 날실에 걸린 각각의 사연들을 하나의 주제로 이끌고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 관객을 작가와 함께 하는 유기적인 대화의 장으로 자연스럽게 이끌고 있다. 최근 박성태는 이러한 가변적 철망 설치작품 외에도 액자에 철망조형을 담은 작품도 창작하고 있다. 액자작품은 4월17일부터 5월22일까지 창아트의 한국지역 파트너 갤러리인 한국 서울 워터게이트 갤러리에서 전시된다. 이 전시에 작가는 철망으로 묘사한 조선시대의 초상화를 선보인다. 이 조선 초상화 시리즈의 작품은 초상화의 윤곽만을 철망에 옮긴 것이 아니라 전통 초상화기법을 입체적으로 재해석하려는 참신한 시도 끝에 탄생한 작품이다.

21세기는 새로운 자원을 창출하는 시대라기보다 자원을 융합하는 능력을 필요로 하는 시대라고들 한다. 이를 반영하듯 현대미술에서도 장르간의 벽을 허물어 조화를 통해 새로운 시각예술의 가능성을 실험하는 노력이 끊이지 않고 있다. 동양화를 전공한 박성태가 오늘날의 설치작품을 창작할 수 있게 된 것 또한 장르를 가리지 않고 대범하게 도전한 결과 이룰 수 있었던 것이다. 베이징과 서울 두 곳에서 진행되는 박성태 개인전에서는 이러한 현대미술의 현장을 체험할 수 있음은 물론, 동북아의 중요한 문화중심인 두 도시를 엮는 문화교류의 장을 형성하기 위해 노력하는 창아트의 기획의지를 확인할 수 있을 것이다.
