Press Release : Madang – 残忆之园 – traces

CHANG ART is hosting the solo exhibition of Korean artist Choong Sup Lim on May 9. Lim, who is active in New York, has held about 10 solo exhibitions there and in Seoul since 1980. This will be his first exhibition in China.

Lim’s works began to gain recognition in New York with his solo exhibition at O.K. Harris Gallery in 1980. His works visually harmonize Mother Nature and civilizations in an intuitive and inductive way. He also presents a unique visual art by injecting Korean emotions into western methodologies.

This exhibition will present 28 installations. The artworks are created from Found objects, rice paper, wood, sand, etc. They cherish the memories of the artist and the objects themselves that have undergone the process of visual summarization. The installations are assemblies of various objects from different places, but they have became clearer and simpler. Therefore, these products of “summarization” give the audiences an impression of a carefully measured glass of pure water that is full at the rim.

His “Madang Dichotomy: Ground & Sky” most clearly reflects the artist’s wish to bridge the communication between the city and Mother Nature. It is an installation of videos and natural objects. Next to the rectangular sky, at the feet of the audiences, are the calm water, sand, and stones. In its resemblance is a small garden, the rectangular sky symbolizes the view above the city that has been fragmented and subdued by high-rise buildings. The artist re-identifies the places and interactions of Heaven, Earth, and Men in modern society and humorously discusses the selfishness of modern urban dwellers that have isolated nature.

In the flood of rapidly renewing information, we work hard to acquire as much knowledge as we can. However, we quickly forget the wisdom of harmony with Mother Nature and lose time to reflect on ourselves. Lim calmly warns us that it is more important to establish our essence and identity rather than devouring new information. Then, he lays a bridge between the chaotic modern city and the isolated Mother Nature and invites us to a journey of communication.

昌阿特画廊5月9日将举办在纽约活动频繁的韩国艺术家林忠燮的个展。从20世纪80年代开始到现在，林忠燮在纽约和首尔等地举行了十余次展览，而本次在中国的展览则为首次。

林忠燮于1980年在 O.K Harris Gallery举办了个人展，并由此开始扬名于纽约美术界。他的作品以直观、归纳的方式，从视觉的角度表现了大自然和文明之间的和谐。并且将韩国的情感蕴于西方的形式之中，献给人们一种来往于东西方感性世界的独特的视觉艺术。

本次展览由28件装置作品组成。由拾来的物品和窗户纸、木头、沙子等所制成的作品，经过视觉上的“缩减”过程，将艺术家自身的记忆和物品本身所具有的记忆原封不动地囊括了起来。虽然作品本身由处于各个地方的、多种多样的物品通过整体组合而完成，但是并没有因此而变复杂，反而是愈加分明和简洁。因此，位于展厅内的这些“缩减”的结果，则会使观众在多次的梳理之后，联想到一杯不溢不涸、恰好盈满的水。

本次展览的作品中，“Madang dichotomy : ground & sky”最好地展现了艺术家试图在都市和大自然间搭建一座沟通的桥梁的创作旨意，是一个影像和自然物所构成装置作品。四角的天空被映照在地面上，水、沙子和石头静静地呆在“天空”的旁边。在作品所具有的类似狭小庭院的构造中，四角的天空象征着那因耸立的高楼大厦而分割的、看起来不完整的天空。通过这个作品，艺术家对现代社会中“天地人”三者间的相互位置和作用进行了再认识，戏谑地嘲讽现代都市人的利己态度。

在信息的洪流和急剧的变革之中，我们为了获取更多的知识，正在努力地奔跑着。但是在这种生活中，我们反而以一种更快的速度遗忘着那种同大自然和谐统一的智慧，我们反观自照的时间也转而减少了。正当这时，林忠燮平心静气地告诉我们，同忙乱慌张地汲取新信息相比，生活中更重要的是一点一滴地过滤出自身的本质从而找回真正的自己。同时，他还在这种“凌乱的现代都市”和“为其所疏远的大自然”之间搭建了一座桥梁，并邀请我们参与进这两者间的“沟通”旅程。

창아트는 오는 5월 9일 뉴욕에서 활발하게 활동 중인 한국작가 임충섭의 개인전을 개최한다. 임충섭은 1980년부터 지금까지 뉴욕과 서울 등지에서 10여 회에 달하는 개인전을 선보였으며, 중국에서의 전시는 이번이 처음이다.

임충섭의 작품은 1980년 O.K. Harris Gallery 에서의 개인전을 시작으로 뉴욕 미술계에 알려지기 시작하였다. 그의 작품은 직관적이며 귀납적인 방식으로 대자연과 문명의 조화를 시각적으로 구현하고 있다. 또한 서구적 형식에 한국적 정서를 담아 동서양의 감성을 넘나드는 독특한 시각예술을 선사한다.

이번 전시는 28점의 설치작품으로 구성된다. 주워온 물건들과 창호지, 나무, 모래 등으로 만들어진 작품 속에는 작가 자신의 기억과 물건 그 자체가 갖는 기억들이 시각적인 줄임의 과정을 거쳐 고스란히 담겨있다. 이곳 저곳에서 온 여러 물건들의 조합으로 작품이 완성되지만, 복잡해지기는커녕 오히려 더욱 분명해지고 간결해진다. 그래서 전시장에 자리한 이 “줄임”의 결과물들은 관객으로 하여금 여러 번의 정제를 거친 후, 넘치지도 또 모자라지도 않게 꼭 맞게 담긴 한 잔의 물을 연상시킨다.

이번 전시작 중 “마당: 땅과 하늘”은 도시와 대자연 사이에 소통의 다리를 놓고자 하는 작가의 바람이 가장 잘 드러난 작품으로, 비디오와 자연물로 구성된 설치작품이다. 관객의 발끝에 바짝 다가온 네모난 하늘 곁에는 물, 모래 그리고 돌이 차분히 자리한다. 작은 정원과도 같은 구조를 띄는 작품 속에서 네모난 하늘은 높다란 빌딩들로 인해 조각나 가라앉은 도시의 하늘을 상징한다. 작가는 이 작품을 통해 현대사회에서 천지인의 상호 위치와 작용을 재확인하고 자연을 소외시킨 현대 도시인의 이기적인 태도를 해학적으로 다루고 있다.

정보의 홍수와 급격한 갱신 속에서 우리는 보다 많은 지식을 얻기 위해 열심히 뛰고 있다. 하지만 이런 생활 속에서 대자연과 조화를 이루는 지혜는 오히려 더 빠른 속도로 잊혀져 가고, 우리 자신을 되돌아 볼 시간도 되려 줄어들고 있다. 이러한 때 임충섭은 새로운 정보를 허겁지겁 흡수하는 것보다는 자신의 본질을 서서히 걸러내어 정체성을 확고히 하는 것이 더 중요하다고 우리에게 차분히 일러주고 있다. 그리고 어지러운 현대도시와 그 속에서 소외된 대자연 사이에 다리를 놓고, 우리를 그 소통의 여행으로 초대하고 있다.
