project 3. age of innocence
Watergate Gallery holds from August 14 to September 10. BRIDGE PROJECT is a continuing project that was held twice in 2008 to discover new artists. To give more artists opportunities to make a debut, it has selected six capable young artists through an open competition.
The first-generation BRIDGE PROJECT artists selected through an open competition have rather unique views of the world, as if they have come from other times or other worlds. As contemporary artists who are constantly making new attempts and embracing new challenges, they focus on life itself, portraying what they have felt, experienced, and thought from moment to moment, rather than criticizing the society and systems or delving in introversion or contemplating their identity. As young children do, the artists talk about themselves with candor and untainted passion. They cherish valuable nostalgia towards “analog experiences of the past” and pursue the hybrid through their work styles and/or materials. Their hybrids combine things of the past that are imbued with history and tradition with something new. Such combination does not consider efficiency to save work time or technological development. Rather, the new combinations remind us of handicrafts, which require long hours of devoted and careful handiwork.
After all, the purpose of hybrid art is to create new value and not to come up with something efficient or economical.
The BRIDGE PROJECT artists reflect the characteristics of the modern society while creating their unique “age of innocence” works that display the warmth of analog emotions to their viewers. Kang, Seo Kyeong uses elaborate measures to portray the travels of a marionette doll in a video piece that contains the emotions of Asian landscape paintings. Ko, Min Jeong creates a collage of black-and-white pictures and color images as a symbol of her dreams about her father. Song, Yu Lim cherishes the memory of embroidery, which she learned from her grandmother, and uses it to create a modern story. Yoo, Eui Jeong talks about the modern civilization using celadon, the symbol of tradition. Shin, Ri Ra transfers her memories of a peaceful and quiet afternoon in the countryside to canvas. Kim, Ji Hea expresses that modern people are willing to make choices in the face of their complicated culture consisting of the public, media, and virtual spaces.
The exhibition will be held again at CHANG Art Beijing (the Beijing partner of Watergate Gallery, located at 798 Art District) in the second half of 2010.
워터게이트 갤러리에서는 오는 8월 14일부터 9월 10일까지, 展을 개최한다. ‘BRIDGE PROJECT’는 2008년 이미 2회 개최한 바 있는 신인 작가 발굴을 위한 연례 프로젝트이며, 2009년 올해부터는 보다 많은 신인 작가들에게 등단의 기회를 제공하고자 공모를 통해 총 6명의 역량 있는 신인 작가들을 선발하였다.
첫 번째 공모 선정 작가임에 더욱 의의가 깊은 이번 브릿지 프로젝트 작가들은 마치 다른 시대 혹은 다른 세계에서 온 사람인 듯 이 세계를 대하는 방식이 조금 특별하다. 끊임없이 새로운 시도에 도전하는 현대 작가로써 사회와 제도를 비판하거나, 자신의 내면이나 정체성에 대한 끝없이 진중한 고찰에 빠져들기 보다는 ‘삶’ 자체에 집중하며 그들 자신이 현재를 살아감에 있어 느끼고, 경험하고, 생각한 순간 순간의 것들을 진솔하게 보여 준다. 작가들은 어린 아이와 같이 때묻지 않은 순수한 열정으로 지금 이 시대를 살아가는 자신들의 모습을 누구보다 솔직하게 이야기하고 있다. 또한 ‘과거의 아날로그적 경험’에 대한 소중한 향수를 간직한 채, 작업 방식 혹은 재료에 있어서 하이브리드를 구현한다. 이들의 하이브리드는 역사와 전통을 지닌 과거의 것과 새로운 것이 결합하는 방식을 취하고 있는데, 이것은 작업 시간을 단축 시키거나 기술적 진보를 위한 효율성을 고려한 결합이 아니다. 이 새로운 결합은 마치 수공예를 연상시키듯 작가의 성실하고 꼼꼼한 수작업에 따른 오랜 작업 시간을 요구한다. 미술에 있어서 하이브리드란 효율성과 경제성을 의미하는 것이 아니라 새로운 가치성을 구현하는데 목적이 있기 때문이다.
브릿지 프로젝트 작가들은 이러한 방식으로 현대 사회의 특징을 반영하면서도 보는 이로 하여금 따뜻한 아날로그적 감성을 느낄 수 있는 그들만의 ‘순수 시대’를 만들어 나간다. 강서경은 작품의 모티브인 마리오네뜨 인형의 여행담을 동양 산수화의 서정성이 담긴 미디어 영상 작업으로 섬세하게 풀어 나간다. 고민정은 아버지에 관한 꿈의 상징을 흑백 필름 사진과 컬러 이미지로 꼴라쥬 한다. 송유림은 할머니로부터 전수받은 자수에 대한 기억을 간직하며, 현재의 스토리로 재구성하고 있으며, 유의정은 전통을 상징하는 도자를 소재로, 현대 문명에 대해 이야기 하고자 한다. 신리라는 전원 생활의 한적하고 조용한, 나른한 오후에 대한 기억을 캔버스에 담는다. 김지혜는 현대인들의 삶은 익명의 다수, 매체와 미디어, 가상 공간의 증폭 등과 같은 복잡한 컬쳐(culture) 속에서 매 순간마다 선택의 의지가 존재한다는 것을 표현하고 있다.
본 전시는 내년 2010년 하반기, 북경 창아트(워터게이트 갤러리 북경 파트너쉽 갤러리, 798 예술구 위치)에서 순회전을 가질 예정이다.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Kang, Seo Kyeong
In the background, which reminds us of a landscape painting, is a marionette doll or a tree with its roots hanging down, the symbols of artist Kang, Seo Kyeong. The artist assimilates herself with her motifs to narrow the gap between her ego and her objects. The negative space in the canvas clearly shows us that the artist has been influenced by Asian paintings. The objects that represent her portray the journey of life as they leisurely travel across the sensible landscape of colors created by Kang. The artist combines her paintings with videos to broaden their scope.
Ko, Min Jeong
Pursuing surrealism, artist Ko, Min Jeong concentrates on dreams, the subconscious, and symbols. The artworks in this exhibition represent her desire to interpret the symbols in her dreams about her father. She finds her ego in the world of the subconscious as the scenes, places, and situations she has encountered in her dreams circulate in her head. The artist reconstructs her dreams by combining the landscapes she photographed with black-and-white films in a collage with color images, and arranging them with various symbols.
Kim, Ji Hea
Various elements disguised as coincidences, and many unpredictable interventions (the public, media, and virtual space), are encountered in life, and a series of selections must be made. The artist names today’s life, where we participate and must make choices without being fully conscious of it, “The Pick-up Game.” A group of people is shown thinking of which one to pick from among layers of acrylic panels on which views of various streets are printed. This reflects the artist’s experience of and thoughts on the coincidental or inevitable choices that must be made in life.
Shin, Ri Ra
Shin, Ri Ra brings the peaceful rural life she has experienced into her canvas. The artist recalls that the static and quiet landscape under the sun between 3 and 5:30 in the afternoon has been sweeter than anything else for her. Most of her pieces are landscapes of a rural town between 3 and 5:30 in the afternoon and express warmth and abundance under the sunshine.
Yoo, Eui Jeong
Majoring in celadon, artist Yoo, Eui Jeong focuses on the historical backgrounds of blue celadon from Goryeo and white celadon from Joseon and believes that celadon has come to assume great value as it highlights cultural nostalgia, as its originality has been heightened, and as it has become a national symbol of Korea. The artist combines various contemporary codes of culture—from fastfood brands like McDonald’s to designer brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel—with celadon to alter it and to disguise it with colorfulness to reflect therein the characteristics of the current era.
Song, Yu Lim
The works of artist Song, Yu Lim are based on her personal stories, a collection of her personal secrets or diaries that have never been revealed to others. The 2007 “Words of Memory” series is a collection or recording of objects that relate to the artist’s childhood and personal memories. She uses embroidery not only to showcase handicrafts but also to tell traditional stories and other stories that have been told for generations.

언뜻 산수화를 연상시키는 풍경 속에는 언제나 강서경 작가를 대변하는 마리오네뜨 인형 혹은 뿌리를 늘어뜨린 나무가 있다. 대상을 객체화하지 않고 자신과 동일시 함으로써 자아와 사물간의 거리를 좁혀 나가며, 캔버스 곳곳에 남겨진 여백은 작가가 동양화의 영향을 받았음을 여실하게 보여준다. 자아를 대변하는 개체들은 강서경 작가가 만들어 놓은 감각적인 색체의 풍경 속을 유유 자적 여행하며 삶의 여정을 보여 준다. 작가는 회화 작업 뿐만 아니라 미디어 영상 작업도 겸함으로써 작업의 범위를 확대시켜 나간다.
고민정 (1978년생)

초현실주의를 지향하는 고민정 작가는 꿈, 무의식, 상징, 기호 등에 집중한다. 이번 작업들은 작가가
경험한 아버지에 관한 꿈의 상징을 해석하고자 하는 욕망의 연장 선상에서 이루어진다. 꿈 속에서 반
복된 장면, 장소, 상황들은 작가의 머리 속을 맴돌며 무의식 세계에 속한 자아를 찾아 나간다. 작가는
흑백 필름 카메라로 촬영한 풍경을 재조합하고 컬러 이미지를 꼴라쥬하며, 상징 기호들을 적절하게
배치함으로써 꿈 속의 장면을 연출한다.
김지혜 (1976년생)

인생은 우연을 가장한 여러 가지 요소들과 예측할 수 없는 중간 개입자들(익명의 다수, 매체와 미디
어, 가상 공간의 증폭)에 의해 선택의 과정을 필연적으로 거쳐야 한다. 작가는 자신도 모르는 사이에
자연스럽게 선택에 동참하게 되며, 또 적극적으로 동참할 수 밖에 없는 오늘날의 삶을 ‘선택게임(Pick
up game)’ 이라 명명한다. 각기 다른 거리의 풍경이 프린트 된 아크릴판들의 레이어(layer) 위에 익명
의 사람들이 선택에 대한 고민을 하고 있다. 이는 우리 삶의 과정에 있어 우연, 필연적으로 발생되는
선택의 경험과 그에 따른 고민을 반영한다.
신리라 (1982년생)

신리라는 자신이 경험한 전원 생활의 한적함을 캔버스에 담는다. 오후 3시에서 5시 반경 사이의 햇살 아래 펼쳐지는 정적이고 느긋한 풍경을 작가는 그 어떤 것보다 달콤한 순간이었다고 기억한다.
작품의 대부분은 오후 3시에서 5시 반경 전원 생활의 풍경이며, 이 시간의 햇살에 비친 풍경의 모습은 더할 나위 없이 따뜻함과 풍요로움을 선사한다.
유의정 (1981년생)

2006 홍익대학교 미술대학 도예․유리과 졸업
도자를 전공한 유의정 작가는 고려 청자와 조선 백자가 가진 시대 정신에 주목하며, ‘자기(瓷器)’가 문화에 대한 향수를 간직하고 지역의 고유성, 민족적 상징물로 고양되면서 보편적 가치로 보존된 매체임을 인지한다. 작가는 지금 이 시대에 일어나고 있는 문화적인 코드-맥도널드와 같은 패스트 푸드에서 루이비똥, 샤넬 같은 명품에 이르기까지-를 도자기와 결합시켜 적절하게 그 모습을 변형시키고, 화려하게 위장함으로써 시대성을 반영한다.
송유림 (1983년생)

송유림 작가의 작업은 마치 숨겨놓은 비밀이나 일기장 같이 그 누구에게도 얘기하지 않은 이야기들에 대한 기록처럼 작가 자신만의 이야기들에 기반을 둔 작업이다. 2007년부터 제작된 words of memory 연작은 송유림 작가의 어린 시절, 소소한 기억들과 관련된 오브제들의 수집 혹은 기록물들이다. “자수”라는 방법을 사용하여, 작가는 전통과 수공예적인 맥락, 더 나아가 세대를 걸쳐 내려온 이야기들의 기록물을 구현하고자 한다.
