WATERGATE GALLERY is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of 17 new works by Singaporean artist Ian Woo from September 16 to October 24.

Ian Woo is Lecturer of Fine Arts Program at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore, and has rapidly gained recognition both home and abroad as an artist to be watched. The premise of Woo’s art is that all materials constantly move and change. The spaces and the objects in them are thus intentionally edited to develop complex compositions, with several layers overlapping with one another. Moreover, the artist uses organic combinations of altered shapes and various colors, and these combinations play critical roles as parts of the overall compositions.

The title “Flux Technicolour” is a conceptual appellation that implies that colors and shapes, the most important elements of art, constantly agitate and change. The artist expresses colors based on his contemplation of the temperature and characteristics of light and affection in that the colors of the materials in a composition intertwine with one another to form an object, as paintings are actually boxes of processed lights. For his artworks, Ian Woo employs the process of improvising forms and contents in an empty canvas and adopting reflective approaches to forms, structures, and colors.

Ian’s work was previously included in the exhibition Space for Perspective at Watergate Gallery’s Beijing partner, Changart this past February, and were singled by many art experts and journalists in China. Ian’s work can be found in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum, the UBS Collection, and many other public and private collections around the world..

This exhibition will present a significant opportunity for the Korean audience to catch one of the Asian art world’s rising stars.

워터게이트 갤러리는 오는 9월 16일부터 10월 24일까지 국내 최초 싱가포르 추상화가 ‘Ian Woo(이안 우)’의 개인전을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 한층 더 심화된 색상과 구성으로 깊이 있는 추상 세계를 보여주는 최근 시리즈 “Flux Technicolour’ 중 15점을 엄선하여 구성하였습니다.

라살 미술대학(LASALLE College of the Arts)에서 순수 미술 프로그램의 학장으로 재직 중인 이안 우는 싱가포르 현지에서 대학 교수 겸 중견 작가로 입지를 굳히고 있는 추상 작가입니다. 작가는 물질이 항상 유동적으로 변화한다는 것을 전제하에 작품을 표현하고 있습니다. 공간과 그 공간 속에 위치한 물체는 의도적인 편집 과정을 거치면서 여러 층의 레이어가 겹치고 얽힌 구성 형태를 지닙니다. 또한 작가는 변형된 형태와 다양한 색상이 유기적으로 얽힌 조합을 적절하게 이용하는데, 이는 작품의 전체적 구성에 결정적인 역할을 하고 있습니다.

이번 전시명인 “Flux Technicolour”는 그림을 구성하는 가장 중요한 요소인 색과 형태가 끊임없이 요동하며 변화하는 존재라는 의미를 내포한 개념적 제목입니다. 작가는 빛의 온도와 특성에 대한 고찰을 출발점으로 하여, 회화가 가공의 조명 상자로서 그 안에서 구조를 이루는 물질들의 색상이 서로 얽혀 물체화 된다는 점에 매료되어 색을 표현하고 있습니다. 이안 우의 작품은 빈 캔버스 위에 형식과 내용을 즉흥적으로 부여해 나가면서, 형태와 구조 그리고 색에 대한 반사적인 접근을 통해 그려나가는 과정을 담아내고 있습니다.

한국에서 처음으로 선보이는 이안 우의 작품은 올해 2월, 북경 창아트(워터게이트 갤러리 파트너쉽 갤러리)의 개관전이었던, ‘Space for Perspective(관념의 공간)’전을 통해 중국 미술 관계자 및 언론으로부터 큰 주목을 받은 바 있습니다. 그의 작품은 현재 싱가포르 현대 미술관과 UBS 컬렉션 등 세계 유수 기관에 소장되어 있습니다.

본 전시는 한국 관객들에게 이안 우의 추상 미술 세계를 탐험할 수 있는 소중한 기회를 제공할 것입니다.
