The Bridge Project is Watergate Gallery’s annual venture aimed at finding and supporting new emerging artists. The first exhibition of Bridge Project in July displayed the work of seven artists who created variations of their daily lives surrounding the theme, ‘you can see around you’. Next, the Bridge Project will show a second exhibition, ‘REPEAT’ from August 7 to August 27, 2008.
Daily routines are merely repetition. Life patterns are repeated every day but we cannot expect anything to happen infinitely in the patterns. The smallest unit in the Digital Age repeats from 0 to 0 and from initial infinity to final infinity. In other words, repetition is a part of progress.
Consequently, repetition means that the same event or action happens over and over again, but the original event or action actually changes throughout the repetition. For example, yesterday feels the same as today, but today is part of a different time.
Watergate Gallery presents Bridge Project 2. It showcases the work of seven young artists who highlight the theme, ‘REPEAT’. The displayed art has been produced through repeated experiments and acts such as: the artists examining themselves and the external world, combining inspiration and materials, and the use of aesthetic techniques.
Bridge Project: 신인작가를 발굴하고 지원하는 Bridge Project는 매해 연례적으로 진행될 워터게이트 갤러리의 프로젝트이다. 첫 번째 전시로 7월부터 ‘you can see around you’라는 주제 하에 7명의 작가들의 일상을 변주한 작품들을 선보였다. 그리고 오는 8월 7일부터 8월 27일까지 REPEAT(반복)을 주제로 두 번째 프로젝트를 선보인다.
반복은 우리의 일상이다. 매일 반복되는 생활의 패턴은 일정하나 그 패턴 속에서 수없이 일어나는 어떤 상황도 예측 불가하다. 디지털 시대의 가장 작은 단위의 유닛(unit)도 0부터 0까지 최초의 무한대에서 최후의 무한대까지 반복적으로 진행된다. 결국 그 반복은 현재 진행형이다. 반복이란 이렇듯 연속적으로 같은 것이 되풀이 된다는 의미를 가지고 있지만, 여러 번 같은 것이 되풀이되면서 결국 원 체험은 과정 속에 변화된다. 마치 어제와 꼭 같은 오늘이지만, 전혀 다른 시간에 속하게 되는 현실과 같다.
워터게이트 갤러리에서 준비한 Bridge Project 2는 반복이라는 주제 아래 다양한 생각과 기법으로 표현하고 있는 7명의 젊은 작가들의 작품들을 선보인다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 작가들은 자신과 외부 세계와의 만남, 작품의 모티브와 미적 테크닉, 영감과 재료의 결합과 같은 끊임없는 반복적 실험과 행위를 통해 제작된 작품들을 선보인다.
