Press Release : Nostalgia 근현대컬렉션

The Watergate Gallery hosts ‘Nostalgia – Modern Art Collection’ from January 15 to February 15 to commemorate the 2009, year of Ox. The artworks of the major 27 artists in the history of modern-contemporary Korean art (early to mid 1900s) will be exhibited, and the exhibition will be comprised of approximately 30 Korean ink paintings and oil paintings.
Nostalgia means ‘remembering the happy moment of the past.’ In other words, it is positive reflection of the past. All of the precious artworks that are possessed by individuals are very valuable as collection for their quality and from the art history context. Moreover, they convey senses of antique, which make the time spent together for a long even more precious.

This exhibition is a special project to look back and enjoy the artworks of the masters of the Modern Korean ink paintings who continue the legacy to this day since early 1900s (Cheongjeon Lee Sang-Beom, Simsan No Su-Hyun, Weoljeon Chang Woo-sung, Goam Lee Ung-no, Haegang Kim Kyu-jin, Euijae Heo Baek-ryeon, Shimhyaang Park Seung-mu, Sojeong Byun Goan-sik, Namnong Heo Keon, Yusan Min Kyeong-gab, Namjeong Park No-soo, Ilrang Lee Jong-sang, Idang Kim Eun-ho and Wunbo Kim Ki-chang) together with the Modern Korean oil painters who were active during the mid 1900s (O Ji-ho, Hwang Yong yop, Choi Ssang-jung, Jang Li-seok, O Seung-woo, Hong Jong-myung, Lee Man-Ik, Lee Joong-sob, Park Soo-keun, Kim Hwan-ki, Na Hye-suk, Lim Jik-soon and O Seung-Yoon). Likewise, this exhibition which offers diverse subjects and techniques going beyond the boundaries of the ink and oil paintings, is expressed some times powerfully with the brush strokes, some times with static lines, or with strong matiere. These artists who were very active in the art community of the modern times, had Avant Garde-like mindset that entailed interpreting and researching the European Modern art to suit the Korean aesthetic after going through the Japanese art community at a time when modernism in Europe was taking place actively, and they exerted significant influence on the artworks of the contemporary Korean artists as well.

Immensely large number of artists and artworks that leverage diverse mediums are pouring out in the art market today, and everything is changing fast. Trend of the art auction, galleries’ marketing strategy, the artists and the dealers who are active, traveling to all different corners of the world – diversity, crossing of the boundaries, promptness and commercialization are factored in clearly into this massive system. True to the notion of “too much is as bad as too little,” now is the time to cool down the over-heated fervor since we are facing the effects of the economy and recession in the art market. We hope that audiences will regain their interest in the traditional art which was forgotten, through the aesthetic sense and color that embraces the relaxation and style of the modern people’s contemplation of life, and through the Korean ink paintings of the same era, and for this exhibition to become a meaningful exhibition that the contemporary art can use as the springboard once more.

워터게이트 갤러리는 2009년 기축년을 맞이하며, ‘Nostalgia – 근현대컬렉션展을 오는 1월 15일(목)부터 2월 15일(월)까지 개최합니다. 한국 근 현대(1900년대 초 중반)회화사의 주요 작가들 27인의 전시작은 약 30점의 동양화, 서양화 작품으로 구성되어 있습니다.
Nostalgia (노스텔지아)는 과거의 행복했던 순간을 기억한다는 의미의 긍정적인 회상입니다. 이번 전시는 1900년대 초반부터 현재까지 맥을 이어오고 있는 동양화의 대가들 (청전 이상범, 심산 노수현, 월전 장우성, 고암 이응노, 해강 김규진, 의제 허백련, 심향 박승무, 소정 변관식, 남농 허건, 유산 민경갑, 남정 박노수, 일랑 이종상, 운보 김기창, 이당 김은호)과 1900년대 중반을 풍미했던 근 현대 서양화가들(오지호, 황용엽, 최쌍중, 장리석, 오승우, 홍종명, 이만익, 이중섭, 박수근, 김환기, 나혜석, 임직순, 오승윤)의 작품을 함께 감상 하실 수 있도록 마련된 특별 기획전입니다. 주옥 같은 전시작품들은 모두 개인 소장품(컬렉션)들로 미술사적으로 주요한 의의를 지니며, 작품의 퀄리티(quality)가 높아 오랫동안 함께 해온 시간이 더 소중한 엔티크(antique)와 같은 느낌을 갖게 합니다.

동양화, 서양화의 경계를 넘어 주제와 기법 면에 있어 다양한 이번 전시는 때로는 힘찬 붓 놀림으로, 정적인 선들로, 또는 마티에르가 강한 유화로 다양하게 표현되고 있습니다. 근대 화단에서 활발하게 활동을 했던 이들 작가들은 당시 유럽의 모더니즘이 활발히 이루어질 동시대에 일본화단을 거쳐 유럽화풍을 한국적으로 새롭게 해석하고 연구한 아방가르드적 마인드를 가지고 있었고 현대작가들의 작품에 많은 영감을 주었습니다.

현재 현대 미술 시장에는 엄청난 수의 작가들과 다양한 매체를 이용한 작업들이 쏟아지고 있으며, 발 빠르게 변화하고 있습니다. 미술 경매 시장의 동향, 갤러리들의 마케팅 전략, 전세계를 넘나들며 활동하는 작가와 딜러 이 거대한 시스템 속에는 다양함, 경계의 넘나듦, 신속함, 상업화가 뚜렷이 반영되어 있습니다. 아무리 좋은 것이라도 지나치면 미치지 못한 것과 같다는 과유불급(過猶不及) 과 같이, 현재 경제 여파 및 미술 시장의 불황을 직면하는 지금 이 시점은 그 동안 과열되었던 뜨거운 열기들을 잠시 식혀가야 할 때입니다. 이번 ‘노스텔지어-근현대컬렉션’ 展을 통해 선인들의 삶의 여유와 멋이 담긴 미적 감각과 색, 그리고 동시대의 동양화들을 감상하며 그 동안 잊혀져 있었던 고미술에 대한 관심을 되찾고 현대 미술이 또 한차례 발돋움해 나갈 수 있는 의미 있는 전시가 될 수 있기를 기대합니다.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Cheongjeon Lee Sang-Beom / 1897 ~ 1972
Born in Gongju. After graduating from the paintings and writings art center, he studied under the tutelage of Ahn Jung-Sik. Starting from 1919, he was active as a member of the association of paintings and writings, and won various awards at the Joseon Art Competition including the Changdeok Palace Award. In 1923, he organized two men exhibition with Ro Soo-Hyun, and formed ‘Dongyeonsa’ with Ro Soo-Hyun, Lee Yong-Woo and Byeon Gwan-Sik. In 1933, he established the Cheongjeon Atelier to continue to operate it until 1945. In 1932, he produced the ‘portrait of Ichungmugong’ for the enshrinement at the Hyeonchungsa Temple. In 1944, he won the art category of the 5th Joseon Art Award. From 1949 to 1961, he worked as a professor of the Hongik University, and served as a judge during numerous National Art Exhibitions.

Simsan Roh Su-Hyun / 1899 ~ 1978
Born in Goksan, Hwanghaedo. Entered the paintings and writings association to study paintings and writings under the guidance of Ahn Jung-Sik and Jo Seok-Jin. In 1920, he produced the mural for the inner wall of the Daejoseon as per the request of the Lee Royal Family in Changdeok Palace. He participate in the establishment of Dongyeonsa, and submitted his work to the two men exhibition along with Lee Sang-Beom (1923), landscape painting exhibition along with 10 painters (1940), and Joseon Namha Federation Exhibition(1942). After the liberation, he was active as a judge and advisor of the National Art Exhibition and as member of the Art Center. In 1943, he won the Art Category of the 4th Joseon Art Award of the Tokyo’s Sintaeyangsa, and worked as a professor of the Seoul National University’s School of Art from 1948 to 1961.

Goam Lee Eung-No / 1904 ~ 1989
Born in Hongseong, Chungnam. He started studying art from the age of 17 under the tutelage of a regional artist. After being trained by Haegang Kim Gyu-Jin, he studied at the Japan’s Kawabata Art School. While learning from Matsubayashi, he won award in the Joseon Art Competition starting from 1925, winning the special selection. In 1946, he helped to establish the Dangu Art Center, and was inaugurated as a professor of Asian painting at the newly established Hongik University. After settling down in France in 1959 after living in Germany, he submitted his work at the Facchetti Gallery in Paris as a guest and at the Sao Paulo Biennale.

Euijae Hur Baek-Ryeon / 1891 ~ 1977
Born in Jindo, Jeonnam. Euijae is the offspring of Hur Ryeon, the master of Namjong landscape painting exhibition. As a child, he learned Chinese characters from the great scholar of the time, Jeong Man-Jo, and learned painting from Hur Hyeong. After going to Seoul, he entered the Giho School, but returned only after one year. Then in 1915, he went to Japan to study the law at the Ritsumeikan and at the Meiji University, but changed his direction to art. In 1938, he formed the Yeonjinhee with Jung Woon-Myeon and Gu Cheol-Wu and established the Yeonjin Center. He was active as the artist recommended at the National Art Exhibition and as a judge. In 1962, he won the ROK Cultural Medal and the ROK Art Center Award.

Ilrang Lee Jong-Sang / 1938 ~
Born in Yaesan, Chungnam. After graduating from the Daejeon High School and Seoul National University’s Painting Department, he majored Asian philosophy at the Dongguk University Graduate School in 1989, earning the PhD degree in philosophy. Starting from 1968, he worked as a professor at the Seoul National University’s Asian Painting Department. Currently, he is a honorary professor of the Seoul National University, specialized committee member of the Cultural Properties Committee’s Museum Sub Committee, and the Commissioner of the Korea Wall Mural R&D Center. He hosted about 20 solo exhibitions and submitted his work to over 400 group exhibitions, both in and out of Korea.

Jang Ri-Seok / 1916 ~
Born in Pyeongyang. Studied at the Japan’s Tamagawa University in 1938. He works as a professor of the JoongAng University by continuing to engage in art work. In 1976 and 80, he organized two solo exhibitions in France. Later, he served as an advisor of the Korea Artist Association, referred artist of the National Art Exhibition, guest artist and judge. His reputation started from the 4th National Art Exhibition with the ‘Ridicule and the Old Man’ and it was in fact the 9th National Art Exhibition when he consolidated his position with the ‘Shadow and the Old Man.’

Daehyaang Lee Jung-Seop / 1916 ~ 1956
Born in Pyeongyang, Pyeongnam. Graduated from the Osan Gobo. While studying in the Japan’s Tokyo Cultural Institute’s Art Department, he receives the Sun Award in 1937 by submitting work to the Japan’s innovative art group and becomes a member of the Free Art Association in 1939.
After returning to Korea in 1945, he taught at the Wonsan Teachers’ School, but came down to South Korea during the 6.25 Korean War, serving as a member of the military’s artist cadre, and participated as neorealism. He was influenced y the fauvisme and contributed to the introduction of the Western painting style into Korea thanks to his unique and folkloric paintings. The painting that he drew by scraping the silver colored paper of cigarette case with drill is considered a pioneer work into the new realm.

Park Soo-Geun / 1914 ~ 1965
Born in Yanggu, Gangwondo. He studied art on his own, and won an award at the 11th Joseon Art Competition in 1932, making his debut at the artistic community. After the liberation in 8.15, he moved to the South, and won the special selection in 1952 at the 2nd National Art Exhibition, and won the Exhibition of Korean fine arts association as well. After the 1958, he was invited to the US World House Gallery, Chosun Ilbo’s exhibition, Manila International Exhibition etc. Likewise, he was very active both in and out of Korea. In 1959, he was recommended artist at the 8th International Exhibition, and served as a judge in 1962 in the 11th National Art Exhibition. His work may look simple, but the overlapping of the oil painting which is repeated many times shows strong Matiere. His work is characterized by the use of Korean topics with the sentiment of the ordinary people.

Suhwa Kim Hwan-Gi / 1913 ~ 1974
Born in Sinan, Jeonnam. In 1936, he graduated from the Tokyo University’s Art Department, and held solo exhibition in Seoul in 1940. While forming the Avant Garde R&D Center, he submitted his work to the Igwahee and free exhibitions, and participated in the movement for new art. After the liberation in 8.15, he formed new realism group, engaging in the modernism movement. After the 1965, he settled down in the US, and started to arrange sketches amidst the continuous square space instead of using detailed images starting from the 1970s. His pursuit of the Korean style motif that he began to pursue after the liberation was pursued in greater depth during three years in Paris starting from 1956.

Jungeul Na Hae-Seok / 1896 ~1949
Born in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. The first female artist in Korea. After graduating from the Jinmyung Girls’ School, she entered the Tokyo Women’s School of Art in 1913 to major in Western art. In 1927, she followed her husband who was a diplomat to travel around the world, sketching in Moscow, EU, and the US. At that time, it is known that she was affected by the naturalism and realism.
Her paintings in the beginning included women in the scenery centered on buildings. This artwork too is one of the kind. This work is presumed to be one that expresses the sentiment of the women with the scenery near the Suwon Palace, in Suwon, her hometown as the background.
On the collection of the work
This painting was kept by the Collector L after it was handed down by his father, Lee Young-Gae (1906~?) who at the time was a business man who did business with Japan. He was well known as a trader and art collector who used to travel back and forth between Japan and Joseon. He used to purchase her paintings during the 1930 and 40s and handed them down to the current holder.

청전 이상범 / 靑田李象範 1897 ~ 1972
공주 출생. 서화미술원 졸업 후 안중식의 문하에서 수학하였다. 1919년부터 서화협회 회원으로 활동하였고, 조선미전에서 창덕궁상을 비롯하여 수 차례 수상하였다. 1923년에는 노수현과 함께 2인전 가졌으며, 노수현, 이용우, 변관식과 ‘동연사’를 결성하기도 하였다. 1933년에는 청전화숙을 설립하여 1945년까지 계속하였다. 1932년에는 현충사 봉안 ‘이충무공 영정’을 제작하였다. 1944년 동경의 신태양사 제정 조선예술상 제5회 미술부문상을 수상하였다. 1949년에서 1961년까지 홍익대학 교수와 여러 차례 국전 심사위원을 역임하였다.

심산 노수현 / 心汕盧壽鉉 1899 ~ 1978
황해도 곡산 출생. 서화미술회에 입학하여 안중식과 조석진 문하에서 서화를 연수하고, 1920년 창덕궁 이왕가의 의뢰로 대조선 내전벽화를 제작하기도 했다. 동연사의 발족에 참가, 이상범과의 2인전(1923), 10명가 산수화전(1940), 조선남화연맹전(1942)에 출품하였으며, 해방 후에는 국전의 심사위원 및 고문, 예술원 회원으로 활동하였다. 1943년에는 동경의 신태양사 제정 조선예술상 제4회 미술부문상을 수상하였고, 1948~1961년에는 서울 미대 교수를 역임하였다.

고암 이응노 / 顧庵李應魯 1904 ~ 1989
충남 홍성에서 출생. 17세 때부터 지방화가의 문하에 들어가 화가로서의 수업을 받았다. 해강 김규진에게 사사 받은 후, 일본 가와바다 미술학교를 수료하였다. 마츠바야시에게 사사하면서 1925년부터 조선미전에서 입선, 특선을 받는다. 1946년 단구 미술원 창립에 가담하고 신설된 홍익대 동양화과 교수로 취임한다. 1959년 독일을 거쳐 프랑스에 정착한 이후 파리 화케티 화랑 초대전을 비롯하여 콩파레종 상파울로 비엔날레 등에 출품하였다.

의재 허백련 / 毅齋許百鍊 1891 ~ 1977
전남 진도 출생. 의재는 남종산수화의 거장 허련의 후손으로 어린 시절 대학자 정만조 문하에서 한문을, 허형에게서 화법을 익혔다. 서울로 올라가 기호학교에 입학했으나 1년만에 귀향, 1915년에 일본으로 건너가 입명관대학 법학과, 명치대학 법학과 등을 거쳤으나 그림으로 방향을 바꾸었다. 1938년 정운면, 구철우 등과 함께 연진회를 조직하고 연진회관을 건립했다. 국전 추천작가 및 심사위원으로 활동했으며 1962년에 대한민국문화훈장, 대한민국예술원상을 수상했다.

일랑 이종상 / 一浪李鍾祥, 1938 ~
충남 예산 출생. 대전고등학교와 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과를 거쳐 1989년 동국대학교 대학원에서 동양철학을 전공하고 철학 박사 학위를 받았다. 1968년부터 서울대학교 미술대학 동양화과 교수로 재직하고 있으며, 현재는 서울대학교 명예교수, 문화재위원회 박물관분과 전문위원, 한국벽화연구소장 등을 맡고 있다. 약 20회의 개인전을 열었고, 400여 회에 달하는 국내외 단체전에 출품하였다.

장리석 / 張利錫 1916 ~
평양 출생. 1938년 일본 다마가와 미술학교 수료. 꾸준한 작품 활동을 통해 중앙대 교수로 재직하게 된다. 1976년과 80년, 프랑스에서 2회의 개인전을 가졌다. 후에 한국 미술협회 고문, 국전 추천작가, 초대작가 및 심사위원을 역임하게 된다. 장리석의 작가로서의 명성은 제4회 국전의 ‘조롱과 노인’으로 부터이며, 작가로서의 확고한 위치에 이른 것은 제9회 국전의 ‘그늘의 노인’부터라고 할 수 있다.

대향 이중섭 / 大鄕李仲燮 1916 ~ 1956
평남 평양 출생. 오산고보졸업. 일본 도쿄문화학원 미술과 재학 중이던 1937년 일본의 전위적 미술단체의 자유미협전에 출품하여 태양상을 받고, 1939년 자유미술협회의 회원이 되었다.
1945년 귀국, 원산사범학교 교원으로 있다가 6.25전쟁 때 월남하여 종군화가 단원으로 활동, 신사실파동인으로 참여했다. 포비즘(야수파)의 영향을 받았으며 향토적이며 개성적인 작업으로 한국 서구근대화의 화풍을 도입하는 데 공헌했다. 담뱃갑 은박지에 송곳으로 긁어서 그린 선화는 표현의 새로운 영역의 탐구로 평가된다.

박수근 / 朴壽根 1914 ~ 1965
강원도 양구 출생. 독학으로 미술을 공부하고 1932년 제11회 조선미술전람회에 입선, 화단에 등장하였다. 8.15광복 후 월남하여 1952년 제2회 국전에서 특선하고 미협전에서도 입상했다. 1958년 이후 미국 월드하우스화랑, 조선일보사 초대전, 마닐라 국제전 등 국내외 미술전에서 활발한 활동을 하고, 1959년 제8회 국제전에서는 추천작가, 1962년 제 11회 국전에서는 심사위원을 지냈다. 화백색을 바탕으로 한 박수근의 작품들은 단조로워 보일 수도 있으나, 수 차례 반복된 유화 물감의 중첩은 강한 마티에르를 보여준다. 한국적 주제를 서민적 감각으로 다룬 점이 특색이다.

수화 김환기 / 樹話金煥基 1913 ~ 1974
전남 신안 출생. 1936년 일본대학 미술과를 졸업하고, 1940년 서울에서 개인전을 열었다. 아방가르드 연구소를 조직하는 한편 이과회와 자유전 등에 출품, 신미술운동에 참여하였고, 8.15광복 후에는 신사실파를 조직, 모더니즘 운동을 전개하였다. 1965년 이후 미국에 정착하여 1970년대에 들어서면서 구체적인 이미지 대신 연속적인 사각 공간 속에 점묘를 배열하였으며, 광복 이후부터 시작된 한국적 모티브에 대한 탐닉은 1956년부터 3년간의 파리 시절에서 더욱 심도 있게 진행되었다.

정월 나혜석 / 晶月羅蕙錫 1896 ~1949
경기도 수원 출생. 한국 최초의 여성 화가로 진명 여학교를 졸업 후 1913년 동경 여자 미술대학교에 진학해서 서양화를 전공했다. 1927년 외교관인 남편을 따라 세계여행길에 올라 모스크바, 유럽, 미국 등을 돌며 미술 스케치를 하였는데 이때 자연주의적이고 사실주의적인 영향을 받은 것으로 알려졌다.
초기의 작품들에서는 건물 중심의 풍경 속에 여인들이 배치되어 있는 작품들이 많은데, 이 작품도 그러한 경향이 잘 반영되어 있는 작품 중 하나로써, 나혜석의 고향인 수원성 근처의 풍경을 배경으로 한 여인들의 서정을 표현하고 있는 작품으로 추정된다.
