■ ENERGY of TIME - Some Thoughts before the Exhibition

by Xia Yanguo

Chinese contemporary art today is evolving into more and more diversified artistic languages and forms that are difficult to define with a certain school or genre. The misinterpretation of Chinese contemporary art by Western art circles has brought both benefit and harm to Chinese artists. In terms of harm, Western misinterpretation that Chinese contemporary art is full of passionate political aesthetics has somehow caused some local artists to cater to the trend. At the same time Chinese contemporary art has also gained more attention than ever. As China's economic and political influence grows, the collection of Chinese contemporary artworks also becomes a popular tool of investment. In this sense, the misinterpretation has stimulated the development of Chinese contemporary art. Since the global financial crisis, the art market has experienced a drastic slump. The cooldown of the much-heated "art boom" provides us an opportunity to advance our thinking and bring the artistic creation back to the true subject of art itself with diversified conceptions in a more realistic environment.

After breaking with collective thoughts, young Chinese artists have based their works more on an individual perspective. But it's too general and vague to say this alone is the common characteristics of their artwork.

Based on my limited personal experience I am convinced that any excellent artwork should possess a tremendous stream of energy that forms a tension in the artwork and create a unified field before the viewer and then start the interaction with the view's thoughts. This is my theoretical understanding to judge an artwork. It is rather general too, so in this exhibition I wanted to start with a small field of view to discuss the inner relationship between the artwork's energy, tension and its "time" element. The title of the exhibition is "ENERGY of TIME." While being spent, time will release its energy to the subject that bears it. The energy converges within the artwork. The better the artwork is, the more energy it will generate. In this sense we can take time as another kind of material and energy another kind of objective being. Everything in the world is in the process of time, consuming and releasing energy in another form. This perspective is similar to the law of conservation of energy, but is indeed different. Adding a physical concept, "time", into the artistic creation makes the artworks have more power and depth.

The exhibition features the works of Wang Guangle, Liu Wentao, Liang Shuo, Wang Yifan, Yan Bing, Yang Xinguang, Kang Haitao, Wu Di and Wang Sishun, all of whom have adopted "time" as a key conceptual element in their works. Two approaches of the mutual transfer of "time" and "energy" can be observed throughout their works: First, the creation of energy, as in the works of Wang Guangle, Liu Wentao, Wang Sishun, Yang Xinguang and Yan Bing, was completed in the form of artists' time accumulation. Second, time was leveraged as a conceptual element in the creation of the works of Liang Shuo, Wang Yifan, Wu Di and Kang Haitao. And of course some works, such as works of Wang Sishun and Yang Xinguang, adopted both approaches.

I do not want to dwell much on the discussion of what the concepts of "time" and "energy" really mean (physically, philosophically, sociologically, etc) during the interpretation of the theme of the exhibition. The "energy" concentration via "time" in artworks is a materialized showcase of the artist's mind, perceptions and labor. It is to be experienced individually.
